One of the best aspects of Shasta Lake is this northern California vacation destination is truly enchanting in all seasons, including cooler seasons.

And visitors who have only explored the open waters in the fun-filled summer months may be surprised to discover that the fall, winter, and spring seasons are equally enjoyable times of the year to launch on a houseboat getaway.

Now is the perfect time to plan your upcoming holiday or springtime vacation, as there are still plenty of options for vessels and dates in the upcoming cooler months.

But if you’re new to houseboating outside of the summer season, and aren’t sure what to expect, here are a few tips to keep in mind, so your cooler winter or spring getaway is a relaxing adventure that exceeds expectations.

1. Pack Plenty of Layers

Shasta Lake has a refreshingly moderate climate all year long, but the temperatures can fluctuate a little more drastically as the day turns to night in the cooler months. As such, you’ll want to pack along plenty of layers to make sure you’re comfortable, no matter what the weather brings!

2. Don’t Be Too Afraid of the Cold

Worried that you may have to tackle freezing temperatures and patches of ice or snow when you arrive? Have no fear, as this is rarely the case! In the prime winter months of December through February, the average temperatures range from a low of 41-45 to a high of up to 60 degrees, while the spring months of March, April, and May experience average lows of 45-55 degrees, and average highs of 63-79 degrees.

3. Don’t Forget the Campfire Gear!

The cooler seasons are an ideal time for an evening cookout or overnight camping trip on the shores of Shasta Lake! Be sure and bring along all the supplies you’ll need for a comforting campfire, including s’mores supplies, hot chocolate mixes, homemade soups and stews, and other comfort foods that are best enjoyed by a warm lakeside fire.

4. Bring the Fishing Poles

The fishing heats up in the cooler seasons! This fact is because as the air and water temperatures drop, the rainbow trout, brown trout, bass, Chinook salmon, and other species move closer to the heart of the lake and closer to the surface, making them easier to spot and catch.

Fishing is arguably at its best in the spring season, but any time of year is a great time to drop a line and see what bites!

5. Plan for Ample Alone Time… and Ample Leftover Vacation Funds!

There are two things that regular Shasta Lake visitors adore about the offseason – the crowds (or lack thereof) and the costs. The “value season” (which generally extends until late May) features reduced rates on all varieties of houseboats, while the local environment is refreshingly quiet, with few other vacationers to share the scene.

As such, expect to enjoy miles of peace in every direction, as well as extra vacationing dollars on hand to enjoy activities, on-land dining experiences, shopping, and other perks that Bridge Bay Marina provides.
